Guidelines to Recharge a Car Battery

When you find that your battery is dead, it can be a big hassle. Even it can also lead to spend money on the tow or the jump and the new battery on top of that. At this time, this article is going to deliver several tips that will help you to save money on charging the battery of your car instead of paying the power for the costly tow and the roadside service. So, just take a look at the following tips.

Firstly, you need to find your charger. You can just borrow it or buy one. Actually, a fast charge is not really required. The batteries tend to charge better with the slow charge. Just open the hood on your car and then locate the battery. It is known that some are located right up front with terminals on the top and some are not. If you find that the terminals are dirty or corroded, you have to clean them. After that, you need to look at the location of the battery and try to see if the alligator clamps will fit in the location of the battery if you find that the batteries do not need to be removed.

Secondly, after you have cleaned the battery and removed it on the work bench or on some wood, you should never on bare concrete.

If the location of the terminal is on the side, you do not need to be panic. Most of the auto parts commonly carry adapters which screw in, the worst case a bolt with the same thread that can be used. You have to make sure that your charger is set to off then plug it in. Then, you should connect negative lead to negative terminal and also positive lead and to positive terminal. Now you can set the charger to the slow or the low amp setting.

Thirdly, you have to be certain after the battery is charged; this can be installed back in the car if it was removed. You should be sure for removing any adapters that you installed before you reinstall. After that, you can connect negative lead to negative terminal and the positive to the positive.

Just check out the information about clamp multimeter if you want to get further information. Here, you can also find more complete information about extech clamp meter. So, just choose any device that suits you best.

The failure of a battery usually comes at the worst time. This is one reason the professionals suggest that vehicle batteries be checked each and every 3 to six months, regardless of where you live.

Batteries Plus, which sells batteries of all kinds, is offering totally free vehicle battery and electrical system testing. In an write-up at Search Auto Parts the battery company’s CEO, Russ Reynolds, said that problems with batteries aren’t confined to cold weather climates.

“Heat and humidity can trigger battery difficulties, too,” he said. He offered some battery inspection and maintenance tips after a warning about the use of eye, hand and body protection when working around the acid and corrosive chemicals surrounding the explosive environment of the vehicle battery.

Hold Downs A battery is subject to vibration if it is not securely mounted to the battery tray on which it rests. A bracket at the top of the battery normally “holds down” the battery to the tray with the aid of a couple of rods that attach to the tray. With the battery firmly mounted to the tray, you will not shake loose active material from the plate grids inside the battery(sony laptop battery), which will extend the its life.

Minimize Corrosion Terminal connections should be corrosion totally free and tight at the point they connect to the battery. Reynolds recommends professional assistance if corrosion is observed. If the battery cable ends or clamps have accumulated a white powdery substance, they might be cleaned with a solution of water and baking soda. You may retard future corrosion by spraying the exposed metal parts with an anti-corrosion product.

Visual Inspection In the event you observe any bulges, cracks or vents inside the battery’s case, it is an indication that the battery is failing and that you need to replace it. Even though inspecting the battery try to keep it clean, since dirt can lead to a power leak resulting in “uncontrolled discharge and power loss.”

Vehicle batteries are surprisingly temperature sensitive. Reynolds recommends giving the battery a break from excessive heat by parking your vehicle in the shade or in the garage. In cold weather he recommends keeping your battery fully charged but not overcharged. He also warns against attempting to charge a battery that’s colder than 60 degrees Fahrenheit, which can cause a violent explosion.

Some batteries exceed their warranty period by many months while other people fail prematurely, it may perhaps be 1 of the excellent unanswered automotive questions. Hopefully, the next battery that you replace will probably be out of concern for its advanced age.

Hybrid Car Battery – The Raw Truth

Since hybrid cars are different from conventional gas engined vehicles, most people are hesitant purchasing a hybrid car. Well, you probably know that hybrid cars have an internal combustion (gasoline) engine as well as a battery powered electrical motor. The latter one causes some uncertainties that might defer the purchase.

A hybrid car battery is like any other battery. The only difference is that these batteries have higher capacity and the can store enough power to move a vehicle down the road for a couple miles. The energy storage system is the most significant part of a hybrid car.

As mentioned above, hybrid car batteries work together with the car’s gasoline engine as well as the electrical motor. In order to achieve the highest possible mileage, the usage of the battery is extensive. Therefore, it is necessary to charge the battery whenever it’s not in use.

For instance, all current hybrid electric cars use the regenerative brake technology which recharges the battery whenever the driver steps on the brake.

Hybrid car batteries are designed to last approximately 150,000 or eight to ten years. Therefore, it is really important to create a well-functioning battery pack. As the hybrid electric vehicle battery technology progresses, more and more types of hybrid car batteries emerge. Fortunately, hybrid vehicles don’t use Nickel-Cadmium batteries, which can be problematic and hazardous to the environment. The problem with these batteries is that they do not deliver sufficient power, thus making them incompatible for hybrid electric cars.

As of now, most hybrid cars utilize a Nickel Metal-Hydride battery pack. These batteries are able to store more energy than Nickel-Cadmium batteries making them appropriate for hybrid vehicles.

Being fully recyclable, these batteries are environmentally friendly. However, the production of these batteries is very expensive and this is the main reason that keeps the cost of a hybrid car at a premium.

There are other types of batteries employed and tested in hybrid vehicles. Many engineers believe that future hybrid cars will utilize a Lithium battery. Currently, these batteries are used in small hand-held gadgets, such as an MP3 player or laptop. These batteries are cheaper to produce and they are also able to store sufficient power to move a hybrid car for hundreds of miles without getting charged. The concern is that Lithium batteries contain an element, Cobalt, which can explode.

Lithium Polymer batteries also have a potential to power hybrid electric cars. The key characteristics of the lithium polymer are safety and good cycle and calendar life. The only concern with this type of battery is the price.

Buy Car Battery and Prevent Mechanical Breakdown

Your car battery is a very important part of your car that allows it to run and allows you to enjoy other features such as lights, radio, air conditioning etc. This works by providing you with electrical energy so that you can run these things, and to provide the spark that starts the engine. Without it then, your car would be unable to start, and you wouldn’t even be able to do so much as turn on the lights or use your window wiper.

This can be a highly alarming mechanical breakdown. You are at a friend’s, or parked in a car park, and you try to start the car – only to find that it just splutters and coughs and doesn’t start and that not even the lights will come on. You will then find yourself stranded and in need of help to get home – and if no help is available this can be a long wait.

What’s important then is to buy a new car battery that you can use to replace your current one.

This is something that will allow them to get back the supply of energy to the car and thereby get it to start again. This will then last you a long time and prevent you from needing to replace it again for at least a couple of years.

How to Tell if You Need a New Car Battery

The best way to know that you need a new car battery is of course that the car won’t start and the lights won’t come on. This is a sign that you are getting insufficient energy to the car and chances are this is because of the battery.

However it can also be a sign that you have a damaged alternator. The alternator is what charges the battery as you drive, and if this doesn’t work then even a working battery will drain out and not recharge. Meanwhile you might accidentally run down your battery and mistake this for a broken battery when in fact you could just replace it and carry on.

If your car won’t start then it’s possible to get a jump start using jump leads attached to your battery and this will start the car in either scenario. From here you can then get the car home to test for problems with either the battery or the alternator. If the battery ran down due to cold weather, then this is more likely to be a battery problem. Likewise if you left lights on accidentally over night, then this might have simply drained your battery and it won’t need replacing. Of course if you have recently replaced the battery or alternator and are still having problems then this is likely to be a problem with the aspect you haven’t changed. If you lose charge again and it’s not very cold, then you could have either an alternator or battery problem.

A Test

To test your alternator, then turn on your headlights and have the engine running. Get someone to stand in front of the car and look at them and then press the accelerator. If the lights either dim or get brighter then this is indicative of an alternator problem. Otherwise, it’s probably the battery.

Mechanical Breakdowns can happen at any time. If you Buy Car Battery it can help prevent breakdowns and ensure that you are always on the road.

Great Tips for Your Car Battery

Unless you have a thousand-watt audio/video system in your car with a stock electrical system, driving your car 3-4 times a week is usually enough to keep your battery topped up and charged enough to start your engine again when you need your car. A Car battery is usually an installed and forgotten item that is remembered only when it fails to work. A little preventive maintenance goes a long way toward ensuring your battery works every time you expect it to and doesn’t suddenly quit.

Any battery discharges gradually over time and it is the function of the car’s electrical charging system to keep the battery topped up while it is being used. The problems begin when a car is kept in storage for a long time, or used so sparingly that the battery discharges to the point that the car won’t start. Although disconnecting the battery is an excellent practice to slow down a car battery’s discharge, many car owners don’t bother to do so because of the inconvenience of doing so and because today’s electronics-laden cars lose their presets when the battery is disconnected. The best procedure to use in this case is to connect a trickle charger to your battery while your car is unused. Trickle chargers are different from standard battery chargers and are very cheap to purchase and operate. They are intended to be connected for long periods and keep the battery topped up.

But having a trickle charge top up your battery is a futile exercise if you abuse that storage device by continually discharging it or neglecting a few simple maintenance procedures. Firstly, standard batteries displace water and in hot climates vent even faster than normal so if your battery has removable caps, make sure that the water levels are correct. Distilled water is all you need to top up your battery. Secondly, evaluate your car’s electrical use if you notice that your battery has an increased tendency of being discharged. You may have installed powerful amps or video monitors that are drawing more current than the car’s electrical system can replace when in use. Or, in an older car, the carbon brushes in the alternator might be going south, and need to be serviced. Thirdly, keep your battery terminals clean. Over time, corrosion builds up between the terminals and the battery posts, resulting in reduced contact that affects the current flow into and out of the battery. Sometimes, this corrosion gets to the point where the car won’t start solely for that reason. Lastly, make sure that your engine’s drive belts are not slipping, because then, the alternator will not be working properly and it will not charge your battery as it should. When you notice slow cranking when you first start up your car in the morning, it could be a sign that the battery is on its last legs and replacing it should be in your list of things to do in the near future.

Maintaining a car battery is simple and cheap.

MIT explores new hybrid car battery alternatives

The ever-increasing prices of gasoline is one of the main reasons why car buyers are looking for other alternatives that could help them reduce the expenses on fuel used for their vehicles. Due to this, majority of the new car search conducted by almost every new car finder are focused on vehicles with impressive fuel economy or the best hybrid vehicles in the market. This trend at present eventually became one of the most popular goals by car buyers together with the continuous search for better auto loans and other forms of vehicle financing.

The increasing fuel cost also of gasoline also motivated car makers to produce hybrid cars that are equipped with electric motors and hybrid batteries that helps in improving fuel-economy of vehicles.

However, hybrid vehicles are criticised for its price and heavy batteries that reduce its performance on the road. Due to this, a lot of studies were launched to develop lightweight batteries with similar or even better performance compared to the heavier version.

Due to this, a team of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) researches has also conducted their own study to produce lightweight yet effective batteries that could be used for hybrid cars.

They launched a three-year project that would focus on the goal of inventing a prototype battery that could possibly be engineered and used as a replacement for batteries used in most hybrid cars. This project was launched in 2010.

After almost a year, the MIT researchers were able to invent a unique type of battery that is lightweight. Its prototype version uses the so-called “semi-solid flow” that allows the battery to store energy and at the same time discharge this when needed. As soon as this type of battery would be used on hybrid cars, this will eventually reduce their weight and improve their performance on the road.

Aside from this, the battery could possibly be refuelled just like changing the car’s oil. By doing this, the battery would function just like a brand new one. It only involves pumping the slurry liquid out and pumping-in fresher as well as fully recharged liquid replacement. Given this innovation, the project’s output might serve as the solution to most hybrid cars’ weight problems.

A guide to replacing your car battery

The sound is unmistakable: “RRRR, RRRR, rrrrr, rrrrr… click.” Then: nothing. It’s the sound of a battery dying, and most of us have heard it.

In Florida, we don’t have the extreme strain on HP laptop batteries like car owners do up north, or even in the desert states out west. But still, like tires and drive belts, batteries must be replaced eventually. And it can get a little confusing.

The first step: Diagnose the problem. Make sure you need a new battery, if yours loses power. A battery that died because you left an interior light on overnight can be recharged. A loose connection at either end of the battery cables can also mimic a dead battery; all you need is for the connections to be cleaned and tightened.

Step two: Do your homework.

If your Apple laptop battery really does need replacement, check your owner’s manualfor the right size and power requirements. Sizes are often listed as “groups” — Group 75, for instance, covers many General Motors vehicles. Group 35 covers many Japanese-branded vehicles. Some batteries have the terminals on top, others on the side. It will also tell you where the battery is. Sure, on most vehicles, it’s right there under the hood, but more manufacturers are moving the batteries to other locations, such as inside fender, or even to the rear of the car.

Step three: Finding the right one. With a vehicle like my Ford F-150 — the best-selling vehicle in the U.S.

for years — finding a replacement battery is a piece of cake. For rare vehicles, or some premium brands, you may have to visit the dealer for a factory-branded battery. You always have the option of buying a battery from your dealer, and with the emphasis on the need to increase service volume at dealerships to make up for slow new-vehicle sales, many dealers are offering very competitive prices.

If you decide to buy a HP pavilion battery from an independent store, though, aside from the size, there are several factors to consider. One, of course, is price, and that can be deceptive. When I recently shopped for the battery for my F-150, there were four different batteries, at four different prices, at the same store. The cheapest battery had the lowest capacity for “cold-cranking amps,” which is how much power the battery can deliver to the starter in extremely cold weather. That isn’t a major factor in Florida, but it does relate to the battery’s overall capacity. The battery may also list simple “cranking amps,” which describes the battery’s capacity at 32 degrees. The number for cranking amps will be higher than the cold-cranking amps. Be sure you are comparing apples to apples.

The cheaper the battery, typically the shorter the warranty. Twenty-four months seems to be the minimum, with 72 months being near the high end. Read the warranty carefully, though, to see if it will replace the battery outright if it fails within the warranty period, or will just pro-rate the battery’s value as it ages. Either way, be sure to keep the sales receipt for the battery in case you need it later for warranty purposes.

Step four: Cost considerations. How much should you spend on a battery? A lot of it depends on the usage of the vehicle. I bought a mid-priced battery for the F-150 — about — because I don’t drive it that often. If it was my go-to-work-daily vehicle, I’d probably go with a more expensive, more powerful battery. Another factor to consider is how long you plan to keep the vehicle. Even an inexpensive battery should last three years in Florida, so if you are planning on trading the vehicle or selling it in the next six months, you may not need the top-of-the-line model.

Step five: Installation. Unless you plan to install it yourself, you’ll need to also figuring into the price any cost for the store or dealer to install it. I have no problem installing my own battery, so I bought from a place that charged extra for installation, which I didn’t need. But with many batteries, installation is free, and it is a slightly messy job. And batteries are heavy. If you replace the battery yourself, you’ll need to return the battery to the store to get back the state-mandated battery disposal fee. If you have the store install it for you, they’ll be able to give you credit for the old battery on the spot.

Step six: Brands. As for brands, it’s less important than it used to be. Only a handful of companies manufacture the vast majority of the batteries sold in the U.S., and you’ve probably never even heard of one of the largest, Johnson Controls, which makes batteries for more than a dozen major outlets.

Batteries have not gone up much in price in recent years, but that may not be the case forever. Environmental concerns have closed a lot of lead mines, and lead is used in manufacturing the plates in batteries. Only one very expensive brand still uses virgin lead, while the others use mostly recycled lead, one reason it is so important to return used batteries. Regardless of how dedicated you are to recycling in general, recycling batteries is mandatory to help keep the cost down.

Clean a car battery before maintenance

I think many car owners will choose to change their automobile battery by themselves rather than spend time and money on waiting for other’s help. Before you change the battery, first of all, you need to ensure if the car battery needs to be replaced. Sometimes the battery is just lack of maintenance. You just clean it and then it will be ok for normal use. As you know, you have found some white, ashy deposit around battery posts, which means corrosion appears. The corrosion will damage the performance of car battery if you never deal with it. So we always need to clean the terminal of a car battery before starting to maintain it. Today, I will tell you a little maintenance information, which is something about how to clean the terminals of car battery.

If you’ve already brushed on the baking soda and water solution to the terminals, you’re ahead of the game.

If not, go ahead and clean the terminals as fully as possible. Removing the sulfate deposits should make it easier to unscrew the nuts from the bolts on the cable ends and from the posts. Gently knock the posts and cables with your hammer to break up the deposit. Then brush on the baking soda solution and finally wipe it away with a rag.

Once the battery is cleaned, inspect it for cracks where acid might escape when you remove it. Make a mental note of these places so you can avoid placing your hands near them during removal. You might also want to place duct tape over any cracked areas to provide a layer of protection — albeit a minimal one.

Lay your tools out on the ground.

If you have a cooler top, you can lay it on top of your car’s engine, but only if your car is completely cool. Otherwise, the Styrofoam may melt. Using Styrofoam as a tool tray will help prevent any accidental electrical charges that can be generated if your metal tools touch your car’s metal surfaces while you work on the battery.

In fact, there are much knowledge you need to learn about car battery, such as how to change a battery, how to buy it, and how to maintain it, etc. These questions all are common failures for your car. Do you want to know more useful information? Ok, just focus on my blog and I will tell you all I know later.

Hi, this is lissa, and I am try to tell something about leoch battery, such as lead acid battery, GEL battery, VRLA battery, UPS battery, motorcycle batteries, golf cart battery, car battery, etc, hope you like it. And if you currently have some suggestions or advices, I am really appreciate if you tell me.

The Second-life Of Electric Car Batteries

As car manufacturers continue to battle in the electric car race, a few have started wondering, where will the batteries go once they have reached the end of their automotive useful life? Simply disposing of the batteries in some type of landfill will not help the environment and will most certainly not appeal to either car manufacturers or customers. To address this concern, several big car manufacturers in the electric car race have teamed up with companies knowledgeable about electricity and energy to plan ways to recycle and reuse outdated electric car batteries and their energy.

General Motors has announced it will collaborate with the Swiss company ABB, a leader in power and automation technologies and the world’s largest supplier of power grid systems, to devise a plan for re-using batteries from the Chevrolet Volt. The companies will develop several pilot projects and examine the Volt’s 16-kWh lithium-ion batteries to see how the second-life car batteries can be used to provide electric grid storage systems.

During the pilot projects the companies will study renewable energy storage, grid load management, back-up power supplies for communities, and time of use management.

According to GM Executive Director of Electrical Systems, Micky Bly, ‘Volt’s battery will have significant capacity to store electrical energy, even after its automotive life.’ This means that after the eight year or 100,000 mile warranty offered on the Volt, the battery will still have energy that can be used for other purposes if the car battery is recycled. Thus, GM’s ultimate goal through its ABB partnership is to find a cost-effective solution that will optimize the full lifecycle of the battery and will improve the efficiency of the country’s electrical grid.

Another car manufacturer that has begun studying electric battery recycling possibilities is Nissan.

Nissan has entered into a joint venture with Sumitomo Corporation to conduct research on used lithium-ion batteries. The joint venture, called 4R Energy, has a purpose to ‘Reuse, Resell, Refabricate, and Recycle’ the electric batteries that power the Nissan Leaf.

The company is expected to conduct demonstration tests and undertake a commercialization study as it works towards developing a business for second-life use of lithium-ion batteries.

Lastly, the California electric car maker Tesla Motors, has entered into a research project with SolarCity, a national leader in solar design and installation, and the University of California, Berkley to investigate outdated electric car battery possibilities. The trio is developing a system that will combine Tesla’s electric car battery system with SolarCity’s monitoring platform to produce an advanced grid-interactive photovoltaic (PV) and stationary storage product which will be able to be installed in buildings. The idea is the battery storage created will collect excess PV power that the utility can use rather than using power plants with larger emissions.

So, as the electric car race rages on, it looks as if General Motors, Nissan, and Tesla Motors will all be competing in the electric car battery race as well. With such big ideas as storage for renewable energy, smart grids, and providing back-up power for buildings, who knows where the second-lives of electric car batteries will end up.

Smart Tips to Fix a Car Battery

A car which will not start commonly points to one thing that is a dead battery. It is known that the battery can have a few things wrong with it which will not allow it for keeping a charge that includes dead battery, bad electrical connection, or low water in battery cells. Actually, it ca be very easy to charge the dead battery with another car and also the jumper cables or by using 12-volt DC battery charger. So, just follow the tips below to easily fix a car battery.

The first thing that you should do is to get inside your car and under steering wheel on the left side there must be a handle for popping the hood open. Then, you need to pull your hood open and keep it open. You can use propping mechanism provided if you find that your hood does not stay open on its own. After that, you should drive another car up in front of or beside your car so that the hoods can be near each other.

You have to keep the non-dead car running and then pop open the hood on the vehicle.

The second thing is to connect jumper cables to the running vehicle first. You should not let the jumper cable black and red connectors touch since it will cause sparks. You have to connect red clamp to the positive terminal and black clamp to the negative terminal. After that, you should connect the other end of the jumper cables to your dead battery the same way.

The third thing is to let your battery charge for about one minute. You can try to start the vehicle which had dead battery. If it can start, then you need to disconnect the jumper cables from both vehicles and just let your car run for a while when the alternator charges the battery.

If you want to know some devices that you may need to fix your car, you can take a look at clamp multimeter for finding further information that include fluke current clamp. This will help you to know better about devices that you need.
